Dawn Gibbons is known for being an industrious entrepreneur having owned and operated five successful businesses. She is well regarded as a political figure in Nevada as an Assemblywoman (1991, 1998-2004) and Nevada’s first lady (2007-2010).
Early and personal life
Dawn Gibbons was born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia. She moved to Nevada at the age of 20 with a suitcase, a couple of hundred dollars and a few dreams of her own. She is a graduate of the University of Nevada-Reno, BGS. Dawn owned a number of successful businesses in downtown Reno and was named Business and Professional Woman of the Year in 1988/89. She married Jim Gibbons on June 21st, 1986. Their marriage ended July 21st, 2010. Dawn is the proud mother of Jimmy Gibbons, now serving in the United States Navy and currently at Meridian, Mississippi in flight training.
Political Career
In 1991, Dawn Gibbons was appointed to the Nevada state assembly, filling a vacancy created when Jim Gibbons resigned his seat during Operation Desert Shield/Storm. She resigned from the state legislature in April 1991, allowing Jim to reclaim the seat. Following Jim’s reappointment to the seat, Dawn resumed her career in business until 1998, when she was elected to the Nevada Assembly. Dawn made history being the first and only state legislator thus far to win a legislative seat in a primary. Dawn served in four legislative sessions and two special sessions from 1998-2004. Dawn was named “Legislator of the Year” by the Nevada State Police and Protective Association. She started the Organ and Tissue Donor program currently at the University of Nevada’s Medical School. During this time Dawn received the 2002 Attorneys General “Role Model of the Year” award (AG Frankie Sue Del Papa). In 2009, Dawn was honored by the Nevada Women’s Lobby and placed in their Hall of Fame for her legislative accomplishments.
Today Dawn lives in Las Vegas and works for Intermountain West Communications as Director of Community Relations. Intermountain West Communications is owned by Las Vegas residents, Jim and Beverly Rogers. They have twelve NBC affiliates and one Fox affiliate. Intermountain West Communication covers the entire state of Nevada with KSNV NEWS 3 in Las Vegas; KRNV NEWS 4 in Reno; KENV NEWS 10 in Elko.
